People in treatment for severe mental disorder have a higher mortality mainly due to cardiovascular disease. Human serum paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is an enzyme linked to high density lipoproteins (HDL) capable to prevent the oxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDL) and the consequent atherosclerosis because of its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory activity. The objectives of this paper are 1) to determine the PON1 activity, 2) to infer its genotype Q/R in 192 position and 3) to know the treatments administered and medical conditions of the patients from the Dr Esquerdo Socio Care Center. PON1 serum activity was determined and the genotype of 29 patients was inferred. The most frequent treatments were antipsychotic treatments with clozapine and haloperidol, mood stabilizers with valproic acid, as well as antidepressants with sertraline and fluoxetine. These treatments altered PON1 activity and elements of metabolic syndrome, according to the literature consulted.
