Introduction: Alterations in different gait parameters and poor cognitive function are the most
important risk factors for falls in the elderly population. Due to the high incidence of falls, different
interventions have been developed to reduce these alterations, including dual cognitive-motor
interventions.
Objective: To describe the effectiveness of dual cognitive-motor interventions performed in a
population over 65 years of age and / or a population with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) as a
therapeutic tool to prevent falls.
Methodology: A bibliographic review of the clinical studies published between 2006 and 2016 in
Medline (through PubMed), PsycInfo and Scopus databases was carried out.
Results: A total of 11 articles were reviewed. The studies analyzed showed significant improvements
in fall risk factors such as velocity, time and step length, reaction time, and executive function improving
gait performance during dual tasks. In addition, the fall rate is reduced, and the self-efficacy related to
the fall is improved, although this fact cannot be affirmed as not finding significant results in all the
studies analyzed.
Discussion: Factors such as heterogeneity of environment, cognitive status, and history of falls of
participants, type of dual task instruction and duration of interventions should be considered, as they
may limit the results of studies.
Conclusion: Cognitive-motor interventions, performed in a population over 65 years of age and / or a
population with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are effective in reducing risk factors for falls and
prevent falls.
