The media has a fundamental role in society, so it is interesting to analyze how they report on certain topics, which may not be at the top of the media agenda. Trafficking in women for the purposes of sexual exploitation is a reality that happens in Spain, therefore, the media has a duty to publish information on this problem. This research aims to analyze whether there is an evolution after the Integral Plan to combat trafficking in women and girls for sexual exploitation (2015-2018). This study also aims to observe the inclusion of the gender perspective in communicative work, analyzing the case of the newspaper El País in digital format.
A descriptive study of written press (El País newspaper) has been conducted on publications related to trafficking in women for sexual exploitation purposes. Publications from 2014 and 2019 were analyzed for comparison, observing authorship or signature, section, journalistic gender, use of generic male, whether trafficking is categoryd as sexist violence (or similar terms) and whether stereotyped language is used. Quantitative methods, such as content analysis, and qualitative methods such as thematic analysis, have been combined for data analysis.
A total of 287 publications have been made on the subject, 142 in 2014 and 145 in 2019. Comparison of the variables analyzed in both time periods has shown that there has been a positive evolution from the changes in some aspects of the publications analyzed after the entry into force of the Integral Plan. However, there are still some points to be improved, especially with regard to the use of language and representation of women who are victims of human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation
