As well as other types of products such as pharmaceuticals or food, there are substances in cosmetic products being able to trigger hypersensitivity reactions, inducing allergies origin. European legislation makes reference to cosmetic products including 26 fragance allergens (24 pure substances and 2 natural extracts), being compulsory to show allergens presence on the product labelling if some of them exceed established legal limit. This work, using one of the most common analytical techniques, high resolution liquid chromatography (reverse phase RP-HPLC), has been developing an analytical method qualified to identify all allergens contained in European regulation and tested its validate in different commercial cosmetic products (hair mask, allergen free shampoo, facial serum and make up remover). Calibration lines were obtained for 20 fragance allergens quantification process in addition to their detection and quantification limits which were also achieved, as well as method precision. In order to detect one of these allergens, Mass spectrometry (MS) was used. As it was referring to a complex extract, the main objective was to detect it unequivocally in the analyzed samples. Obtained data showed that this method is fully functional due to it can be applied on real cosmetic product samples, although there were some label specified allergens which were not detected. Future test are necessary to conclude method validation for routine use.
