Introduction: Cervical pain is the fourth leading cause of disability worldwide. Although the etiology of this disorder is very varied, patients frequently present with functional alterations in the cervical musculature including decreased strength and endurance of the cervical flexor and extensor muscles. There is abundant evidence on clinical tests that evaluate the resistance of the neck flexor muscles, however, the evaluation of the same in the extensors is less well known.
Objetive: To assess the clinical usefulness of tests that evaluate the endurance of the cervical extensor muscles in patients with neck pain.
Material and methods: A literature search was carried out in the Pubmed, PEDro, ScienceDirect, Scopus and Web of Science databases for studies published from 2011 onwards, on the evaluation of the resistance of the cervical extensor musculature in patients with neck pain. In addition, the methodological quality of these studies was analysed.
Results: Seven cross-sectional studies were included, in which a clinical endurance test of the cervical extensor muscles was performed on patients with neck pain and/or asymptomatic subjects. The different ways of performing the tests, the characteristics of the tests and the study subjects were analysed.
Conclusions: There is limited evidence about the clinical assessment of cervical extensor endurance in patients with neck pain as well as the clinical utility and reliability of the tests that assess it.
