Introduction and objective: Idiopathic facial palsy is an acute and self-limiting form of lower motor neuron palsy due to non-suppurative inflammation of the facial nerve in the styloid foramen mastoidis. Treatment is based on pharmacology and different physiotherapy techniques applied in the acute or chronic phase of the pathology. The aim of this review is to clarify the effectiveness of physiotherapy in this disease for the improvement of pain, functionality and quality of life.
Material and methods: We searched PUBMED, Pedro, Scopus, Cochrane Library and Enfispo for randomized clinical trials published from 2010 to 2020 on physiotherapy techniques applied in Bell's palsy.
Results: 15 studies applying laser therapy, electrostimulation, facial exercises and manual therapy and acupuncture or combinations of these. There is much variety in dosage and physiotherapy protocols and although they coincide in some studies there is no clear consensus. The three most commonly used scales for the assessment of this paralysis have been House Brackmann, Sunny Brook and the Facial Disability Index. The most effective techniques have been facial exercises in more severe patients and laser therapy in the acute phase of the disease.
Conclusion: The evidence summarized in this review suggests that facial exercises and laser application improve functionality and quality of life in patients with Bell's palsy. Further studies with larger sample size, better methodology and improvements such as including how it affects pain will be needed to confirm the hypothesis
