TITLE: Urinay incontinence in women athletes. A proposed intervention program.
BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence (UI) is the most common pelvic floor dysfunction. In the female athlete, SUI is more frequently observed because activities, especially those with high impact, can overload, stretch and weaken the pelvis and its respective floor muscles over time. It is not only a physiological problema, but also a psychosocial one. Individualized rehabilitation programs consisting of muscle training can be the mainstay of treatment.
OBJECTIVES: Identify the main risk factors for UI in athletes and verfy the effectiveness of physiotherapy tretament. Secondarily, a public health intervention program is proposed.
METHODS: A literature review was carried out on Pubmed, PEDro, Embase and Scopus with the keywords “Physical Therapy”, “Physiotherapy”, “Rehabilitation”, “Urinary Incontinence” and “Athletes” using the Boolean operator AND and following the inclusive citeria.
RESULTS: A total reuslt of 7 articles were found following the inclusion criteria.
A disappearance or reduction of symptoms is observed after applying a rehabilitation program in female athletes with UI. Physical exercise is evidenced as a risk factor for urinary incontinence, volleyball being one of the most prevalent sports. There is an impact on the quality of life of women with urinary incontinence both in daily life and in sports.
CONCLUSION: Despite the limited number of scientific articles in this regard, the conclusions drawn show the benefits of a rehabilitation program as a treatment for stress urinary incontinence in athletes, with high-impact sports being those that present the highest risk. More research is needed on this aspect.
