Introduction: Gluteal tendinopathy or greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS), traditionally
diagnosed as trochanteric bursitis, has a prevalence of 10-25% in the adult population and usually affects
women between 40 and 60 years of age. It causes severe pain in the greater trochanter area, tenderness
on palpation, and pelvitrochanteric muscle weakness. The correct categorization of the pathology in
recent years has caused a peak in his research.
Objectives: To know the effects of physical therapy in gluteal tendinopathy considering the current
scientific literature.
Material and methods: Clinical trials that included physical therapy effects in patients with gluteal
tendinopathy or greater trochanteric pain syndrome were screened since 2011 to 2021 in the following
electronic databases: Science Direct, Web of Science, Pedro, PubMed, MedlinePlus and Scopus.
Results: Seven studies were selected. One article compared exercise therapy with other nonphysiotherapeutic
techniques, two articles compared two different modalities of exercise therapy, two
articles have dealt with shockwave therapy, one study has deal with dynamic tape and the last one
compared dry needling with another non-physiotherapeutic technique. The main outcome measures
have been pain intensity and lower limb function.
Conclusions: All the physiotherapy treatment modalities discussed in this review represent safe and
effective options for reducing the symptoms of gluteal tendinopathy. More research is needed to be able
to create action protocols.
