Emerging contaminants are compounds of daily use and essential to both industrial and domestic level and they are an important source of water pollution, especially in the case of pharmaceuticals. In the last years, biofilters or biological beds are taking a big boost as low-cost systems for the depuration of polluted water. Overall the most frequently biofilters tested are composed of a biomixtures of soil, peat and straw, however, these systems have not been used for removal of pharmaceuticals wastes in water. Because the peat is a limited natural resource and using the high production of waste generated by the olive agroindustry that exists in our country, in this work the replacement of peat is posed by alperujo to develop different biomixtures. The adsorbent potential of these biomixtures must be suitable for the compound does not leach and available to be degraded biologically. Adsorption studies were carried out by experiments denominated in batch, based on the agitation of an aqueous solution containing the pharmaceuticals, with a certain amount of biomixture. After the equilibrium time required to reach the maximum amount adsorbed, the pharmaceuticals concentration in the supernatant was determined, considering that the difference in this and the initial concentration is the amount of adsorbed contaminants. Given the low solubility of the pharmaceutical in water, these were directly applied on biomixtures and the remaining amount was determined by solvent extraction. The liquid chromatography for analysis of pharmaceuticals in solution and in the biomixture allow to calculate the adsorption isotherms using mathematical models and adsorption coefficients of each pharmaceutical in biomixture. Based on adsorption studies carried it is concluded that both alperujo vermicompost as alperujo are suitable alternative materials peat, which capture emerging organic contaminants such as diclofenac and ibuprofen in biomixtures. The adsorption behavior observed in biomixtures is influenced by the characteristics of pharmaceuticals, especially their solubility and pKa values and the stabilization of the alperujo by vermicomposting, because the retention of pharmaceuticals in the biomixture with vermicompost is higher than the alperujo uncomposted
