El Parque Científico UMH: Una vacuna para las crisis económicas

Abstract

En el año 2005 la Universidad Miguel Hernández (UMH) de Elche puso los cimientos para crear su parque científico. Su misión era mejorar el futuro de su comunidad generando un tejido empresarial atractivo y potenciando el intercambio de conocimiento y tecnología. Tras más de 10 años de trabajo, ahora comienzan a recoger los frutos. En el Parque Científico UMH (PCUMH) han impulsado más de 140 start-ups y spin-offs y han asesorado a más de 1.400 personas emprendedoras y 750 proyectos. El Parque Científico UMH y las cerca de 70 compañías vinculadas funcionan como un polo de atracción tanto para otras empresas innovadoras como para trabajadores altamente cualificados. Tras un largo periodo en España de “fuga de cerebros”, un parque científico supone una oportunidad para que otros científicos, ingenieros o profesionales desarrollen su actividad sin necesidad de emigrar. Incluso, puede ser un atractivo para recuperar el talento perdido. El peso del turismo en España es muy alto en relación con sus países vecinos. Depender de este sector hace que su economía sea más vulnerable. En cambio, desde el PCUMH están poniendo los medios para que se desarrollen industrias prometedoras como la aeroespacial o de biotecnología. El campo de actuación del Parque Científico UMH se establece en la provincia de Alicante. Gracias a distintos programas incentivan el emprendimiento innovador y la colaboración entre empresas, grupos de investigación, inversores y otros agentes del ecosistema. De esta forma, ayudan a fomentar el desarrollo de las localidades para evitar su despoblación y para crear una red resistente capaz de competir con otros entornos punteros. Crear un hábitat adecuado para que la innovación aflore beneficia a la sociedad en diferentes aspectos. Un ejemplo de ello se vio ante la crisis generada por el COVID-19. Miembros del PCUMH pusieron sus recursos y conocimientos para ofrecer soluciones disruptivas.

In 2005 the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) of Elche laid the foundations to create its scientific park. The mission was to improve the future of its community by generating an attractive business fabric and promoting the exchange of knowledge and technology. After more than ten years of work, they are now beginning to reap the rewards. In the UMH Scientific Park (PCUMH) they have promoted more than 140 start-ups and spinoffs and they have advised more than 1.400 entrepreneurs and 750 projects. The UMH Scientific Park and the near of 70 related companies work like a pole of attraction for innovative business and for highly qualified workers. After a long period of “brain drain” in Spain, a scientific park is an opportunity for other scientists, engineers or professionals to carry out their activities without having to emigrate. The weight of tourism in Spain is very high in relation to its neighbouring countries. Dependence on this sector makes its economy more vulnerable. On the other hand, the PCUMH is providing the means to develop promising industries such as aerospace and biotechnology. The UMH Scientific Park’s field of action is established in the province of Alicante. Thanks to different programs, they encourage innovative entrepreneurship and collaboration between companies, research groups, investors and other agents of the ecosystem. In this way, they help to promote the development of localities to avoid their depopulation and to create a resilient network capable of competing with other leading environments. Creating the right habitat for innovation to flourish benefits society in different ways. An example of this was seen in the crisis generated by COVID-19. Members of the PCUMH put their resources and knowledge to work to offer disruptive solutions.
