EL Hospital Civil de Oliver de Alcoi. El Legado de D. Agustín Oliver

Abstract

Durante el siglo XIX y principios del siglo XX, las condiciones laborales de los trabajadores eran precarias, así como las condiciones de vida, incluidas las viviendas, alimentación, el agua y otras relacionadas con la salubridad. Esto hacía que la morbimortalidad, especialmente la infantil, fuese muy importante y les estructuras sanitarias no podían responder a las necesidades para una mayor salud de los ciudadanos. Un industrial y mecenas que vivía y trabajaba en Alcoi principalmente, dejó escrito que, entre otros, uno de los benefactores de su legado, fuese el pueblo de Alcoi, pero fundamentalmente la clase trabajadora, los pobres. En ese sentido, mandó construir un hospital, el hospital civil de Oliver (en honor a su apellido), dirigido a dar soporte sanitario gratuito especialmente a los obreros. Un hospital de vanguardia para aquella época. Pasados los años el edificio sufrió la consecuente degradación del paso de los años y tanto el ayuntamiento como sus herederos, lo cedieron a la Generalitat, la cual al mismo tiempo hizo una cesión de uso y mejora a una empresa privada para construir un hogar de la tercera edad, mayoritariamente privado, es decir, con ánimo de lucro. La cuestión que nos falta por saber es si realmente era eso lo que D. Agustín hubiese querido para su legado
