Television has become an essential tool for dissemination information and knowledge. So much that even universities have created their own audiovisual channels. The presence of these in digital environment –both on websites and on social networks– favors the content to arrive at any place place and manages to capture and retain audience.
Most of Spanish university televisions were created between 2006 and 2010. Our case study, UMH TV, the channel of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, was launched at the end of 2013, with a weekly information programme –“UMH News”– and a biweekly report –“UMH Reports”–. Its evolution over these five years has placed this television among the three most powerful university channels in YouTube, together with Polytechnic University of Valencia and Polytechnic University of Madrid.
Despite of the rise of these three televisions, the national scene of educational channels is scarce, and it needs a major development and to reinvent their formats. In the international landscape, the quality model is found on specific Latin-Americans universities, whose televisions have become a referent inside and outside their borders.
We find that UMH Television carries out two main functions: on the one hand, it informs the academic community and general society about what is related with the University and, on the other hand, is a training place for Journalism and Audiovisual Communication students, who learn how to work in the day-to-day of a media organization.
Through the analysis of this channel we can conclude that UMH Television elaborates quite a good content with its current resources, but there is no doubt that it must continue investing in quality to become a reference in university television.
