Business models are one of the main concerns of media companies, although this wasn’t the case until about a decade ago (Achtenhagen and Mierzejewska, 2015). With the change of paradigm, academics tried to find a homogenous definition for the business model, although, as Carvajal points out (2018), most theorists agree that it’s an "elusive" concept. There are about 70 definitions of business model (Onetti, 2012), which has made it difficult to simplify. Moreover, with the arrival of the Internet, most of the newspaper's had to reinvent and rethink their business models (Tucci, Nyre, Rybero, Tassem, 2018). Traditional media turned out as the main victim, but the immobility in the business models has appeared in media companies of all kinds. Morevorer, another issue appeared: the reduction of advertising revenues and the arrival of technological giants such as Google or Facebook, which have changed the information consumption habits of the audience. In this context, the aim of this investigation has been to know the business models of three spanish newspaper publishers (Libros del KO, El Confidencial and Alternativas Económicas), which, despite their differences in their editorial production, share several similarities in strategies in order to maintain sustainability. The study was carried out through a closed numerical questionnaire to people with responsibilities in the business model of the three newspapers, as well as through in-depth interviews that allowed us to extend the knowledge. In general, the results obtained indicate that the three companies have a sustainable business model that presents a defined strategy for each of the components of the business model. However, despite the similarities found, there are important differences in the revenue streames used and in the value propositions to advertisers, which reveals a certain degree of heterogeneity between the models.
