School bullying or bullying is a social problem that increasingly has an impact on the
media, mainly due to the increased awareness of the public on the subject. Therefore,
this paper analyzes the information treatment of the two media with the largest audience
in the national territory, according to the General Media Study (AIMC, 2018): El
Mundo newspaper and El País newspaper.
The objective pursued is to check whether the treatment carried out during 2018 by both
media is adapted to the ethical and deontological principles of Journalism. Likewise, it
is intended to verify the equality and visibility of the sources used, as well as the
preferred journalistic approach and genre to deal with this topic, in order to establish
some general characteristics in the way of presenting the information during the analysis
date.
The case study has been carried out through a content analysis of both media, where
variables such as date of publication, sources, focus, gender or section used have been
analyzed; as well as the consultation through a questionnaire to the target audience. In
addition, interviews have been conducted with journalists from both newspapers, in
order to know the justifications of each one. Thus, quantitative and qualitative analysis
have been combined, in order to obtain a vision of the situation as global as possible.
The results obtained show, in general terms, that news is the preferred journalistic genre
to present information related to school bullying, in addition to direct sources of events
are not usually used because in most cases are less old. Likewise, there has been an
information gap on this problem in different months of the year, as well as the criticism
of the target audience for the activity carried out by the media, considering it
insufficient.
