The role of media is essential for the construction of an including and equal social frame.
The feminist recognition and the struggle for equality of rights between women and men is already part of media's agenda. Nevertheless, an equality law that regulates private media in Spain doesn't exist yet, therefore the task to include gender perspective becomes an ethical duty of the media itself. This research intends to study the inclusion of gender perspective in the communicative work, focusing on the case of Spanish written media.
The methodology used for that has been a descriptive and cross-wise study on the selected newspaper through the analysis of its contents and techniques to quantify the study variables. It has been looked into if the production of contents on men and women are equal and if they both given the same prominence in the published news, as well as if the media follows the recommendations of usage of non-sexist language and if the content of news is influenced by stereotypes based on gender.
It has been observed that the production of contents and the importance of news is unequal, displaying men rather than women. On the other hand, media seems to have good care of the usage of language, although a stereotyped version of both genders is still presented. As a whole, gender perspective into the communicative task is included in the production of contents of the analyzed newspaper, but a real transformation in the power structure and the distribution of contents is very much needed, which guarantees equality between genders in the information production, and in the qualification of both male and female journalists, who must be trained in gender perspective.
