The objective of this research work is to analyze the film Nightcrawler (2014, Dan Gilroy) and how it shows the sensationalism prevailing in today‟s media, in his constant search for the best ratings.
First of all, we will review the history of journalism in the cinema briefly, in other words, the image that the seventh art has projected over the years of both journalism and journalists. To do this, we will review some of the most emblematic films and their differences to adapt the journalistic profession to the big screen. We will give special attention to recent films that have been released in the last years, but without forgetting some classics which it is essential to mention. Then we will make a selection of contemporary films (2000 and beyond) that to a greater or lesser extent reflect the sensationalism in media.
Later, focusing on the film which is the object of this work, we will make a presentation of it, by reviewing the career of its director, Dan Gilroy, as well as his reception by the specialized critics and the numerous awards that the film has obtained since its release. Next, we will do a thorough analysis of the film, by highlighting a series of scenes, dialogues and situations that contain a criticism, implicitly or explicitly, of yellow journalism, or that in some way reflect the lack of ethics of the mass media, extremely obsessed only with being the first to offer certain scoops.
