Attitudes to death held by health professionals can influence the quality of care provided to dying patients. Research has shown that resilience, self-esteem and emotional intelligence are competencies which help those professionals to cope positively with death and dying. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between fear of death, death anxiety, resilience, self-esteem and emotional intelligence in a sample of Physiotherapy, Psychology and Podiatry students. A cross-sectional and correlational design was used. The final sample was composed of 313 students who completed a questionnaire which contained information about the variables previously mentioned. Mean score in fear of death was 97.92 (SD = 18.47) and in death anxiety was 43.57 (SD = 13.37). Statistically significant differences were found depending on gender, grade and degree. Death anxiety was negatively correlated with age, resilience, self-esteem, clarity of feelings and mood repair. Fear of death was positively correlated with attention to feelings. These results show that fear of death and death anxiety are influenced by emotional intelligence, resilience and self-esteem. Because of this, health professionals should receive information related to death, as well as develop those skills in order to cope positively with patient death and suffering
