Abstract:
Self-esteem and self-concept are two terms widely studied in the scientific
literature. Self-concept is conceived as the image of the cognitive itself, compared to the
affective of self-esteem. Likewise, the disability arises, and in particular the visual
impairment as a factor of vulnerability in the development of a negative self-esteem and
self-concept. Through this pilot study of a descriptive observational type of cross
section, two samples of adults with and without visual impairment were compared with
the objective of studying the existence of differences between their values in self-esteem
and self-concept. The total sample of the study was composed of 35 subjects, 20 of
them legal blind and the other 15 without disability, performing an evaluation of both
groups by collecting demographic data, self-esteem, self-concept by dimensions and
femininity-masculinity. The analysis of the results was carried out through the
descriptive study of means and frequencies, the use of the Student's T, the dispersion
charts and the linear regression model, hoping to find significant differences between
the average scores of both groups for the variables studied. The non-fulfilment of the
hypothesis of departure, was raised as a consequence of the sample size, the selection of
an unbalanced sample according to gender and age, as well as the presence of strange
variables unguarded in this and other previous studies. There were found different
limitations, highlighting the small size of the sample and the shortage of previous
scientific bibliography.
