This article presents a case of an alleged post-traumatic stress disorder with dissociative
symptoms, according to the DSM-5 and its reciprocity on the parental style, developed and
maintained by a deficit in confrontation strategies, acquired since childhood. A 42-year-old
woman, divorced two years ago, goes to the clinic without awareness of illness, worried about
her children, because she firmly believes that they are being used by her ex-husband to continue
mistreating her, with great anguish and frustration, with obvious signs of physiological over
activation, mental and emotional block, mostly during the fortnight of each month that she has
her children. The instruments for evaluation are: (EGEP-5) Global Evaluation of Posttraumatic
Stress; (BDI-II) Beck-II Depression Inventory; (STAI) State-Trait Anxiety Questionnaire;
(EPQ-R) Eysenck-R Personality Questionnaire; (EHS) Scale of Social Skills and self-records. The techniques used were: the conceptualization of the problem that affects the chronicity,
form, development and maintenance of the disorder; cognitive behavioral therapy based on the
conditioning model; and theories of learned helplessness and information processing. The
duration of the therapy was 8 sessions, each session from 60 to 90 minutes, for 6 months. The
post-test was carried out 2 months after the last session. The results presented on the effect of
the change of the baseline have been excellent. Variables such as personality have been valued,
while at the same time achieving the expected effectiveness on the improvement of a healthier
and more adequate parental style.
