The increasing development and use of plant extracts with therapeutic, cosmetic and nutraceutical applications have increased the need to subject these matrices to rigorous monitoring of chemical contaminants. During the extraction of raw plant materials, there is a possibility that pesticide residues may become concentrated, in some cases exceeding the maximum residue limits that have been established by legislation. This could constitute a potential toxicological risk to consumers. In addition to their health and regulatory implications, the unintended presence of these contaminants in biotechnological research represents a critical challenge, as they may interfere with the observed molecular responses and hinder the attribution of the observed biological activity exclusively to the compounds present in the extract. The objective of this project was to develop and validate a highly sensitive multiresidue analytical method using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) for the simultaneous determination of pesticide residues in complex plant extracts. For the purpose of this study, an initial panel of 203 pesticides was selected for analysis. The method was then applied to a pomegranate extract with cosmetic potential and a bioactive rice straw extract. In order to achieve this objective, a database was developed containing the MRM transitions and retention times of the analytes. The chromatographic and mass spectrometric conditions were then optimized, and the method was validated for 168 pesticides. Subsequently, the method was applied to the analysis of two plant extracts to evaluate the presence of pesticide residues and determine their chemical quality. The developed method constitutes a sensitive and selective tool for the monitoring of pesticide residues in complex plant extracts, thus contributing to the control of their chemical quality and providing a reliable analytical tool for the correct interpretation of future biological studies.es_ES
