Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is a common intervention in athletes; however, return to sport (RTS) remains a clinical challenge, as it does not depend exclusively on physical recovery, but also on psychological and biomechanical factors involved in sports-specific movement execution. Although variables such as confidence, fear of re-injury and psychological readiness influence the return-to-sport process, there is still limited integration between these factors and movement quality during functional tasks close to the competitive context. OBJECTIVE: To propose an observational protocol aimed at analyzing the relationship between psychological readiness for return to sport and movement quality in football players who have undergone ACL reconstruction and are in the return-to-sport phase. METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional observational study with a within-subject comparative design is proposed. Psychological readiness will be assessed using the ACL-Return to Sport after Injury questionnaire and the Fear of Return to Sport Scale, while movement quality will be analyzed using the Cutting Movement Assessment Score and the Landing Error Scoring System. Functional testing will include change-of-direction tasks and jump-landing maneuvers performed under single-task and dual-task conditions, incorporating a secondary visual discrimination task. DISCUSSION: The integration of psychological and biomechanical variables may facilitate the exploration of associations between athletes’ psychological readiness and movement quality, especially under increased cognitive demand. This approach may favor a more ecological and multidimensional assessment of RTS after ACL reconstruction.
