Abstract:
Baill.
Objective: To review the available scientific evidence on the therapeutic potential of Griffonia simplicifolia (Vahl ex DC.) Baill. and its main active metabolite, 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), in mental disorders.
Method: A systematic bibliographic review was carried out using the MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases. Human studies evaluating the use of 5-HTP, either alone or combined with other compounds, in patients with mental disorders were included. Reviews, meta-analyses, animal studies, articles unrelated to the objective of this work and studies without full-text availability were excluded. Finally, 8 studies were selected for analysis.
Results: The reviewed studies showed favorable results for 5-HTP in depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and sleep disturbances. Overall, 5-HTP showed good tolerability, and no serious adverse effects were reported in most studies.
Conclusion: 5-HTP could be of interest as a complementary therapeutic option in some mental disorders. However, the evidence is limited due to the heterogeneity of the studies, the small sample sizes and the lack of specific clinical trials using standardized extracts of Griffonia simplicifolia (Vahl ex DC.) Baill.
