Introduction: High blood pressure (HBP) and being overweight are highly prevalent cardiovascular risk factors in adults, and the initial approach to managing them is based on lifestyle interventions, particularly the Mediterranean diet. Certain micronutrients with antioxidant properties, such as magnesium, vitamin C and hesperidin, may help to improve endothelial function and lower blood pressure (BP). Objectives: To assess the effect of a combined nutritional intervention based on the Mediterranean diet and oral antioxidant supplementation on blood pressure and anthropometric parameters in adults with stage I hypertension who are overweight, compared with the Mediterranean diet alone. Materials and methodology: An 18-week randomised clinical trial will be conducted at the Vistabella Health Centre (Murcia). The sample size will be estimated using the Fisterra calculator, and recruitment will take place at the centre itself. Participants will be randomly assigned to the intervention group (Mediterranean diet and daily oral supplementation with magnesium citrate, vitamin C and hesperidin) or the control group (Mediterranean diet). The study will include three visits: baseline, interim and final. The primary variables will be systolic and diastolic blood pressure, together with anthropometric parameters (weight, height, BMI, waist and hip circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio). Secondary variables will include adherence to the Mediterranean diet, assessed using the MEDAS-14 questionnaire, and adherence to supplementation. Statistical analysis will be performed according to the data distribution, applying parametric (Student’s t-test) or non-parametric (Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon test) tests. In addition, within-group and between-group comparisons will be carried out, as well as repeated measures models to analyse changes over time. The data will be processed using SPSS software. Applicability: The intervention will be implemented in primary care and will enable a comparison of outcomes and an assessment of its clinical impact on improving health. |
