Lo que viene después de After: de fanfic a fenómeno editorial y cinematográfico

Abstract

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar el fenómeno de After, obra nacida como un fanfic en la plataforma de Wattpad, que se convirtió en superventas y, posteriormente, en una exitosa saga cinematográfica. El estudio se centra en las cinco partes del texto de After como todo y como parte de las películas. En este sentido, explora el origen de la historia en el fanfiction y en el mundo del fandom. Además, se busca catalogar a After como un fenómeno estudiando el alcance de las recaudaciones en taquilla y la evolución de este género. En este sentido, Wattpad cuenta con una editorial tradicional y una productora audiovisual que participó en la adaptación de todas las entregas de After. Asimismo, a partir de esta obra se han publicado de manera tradicional y han llegado al cine diversas novelas nacidas en esta plataforma. Por último, en este trabajo se trata la relación de los protagonistas, Tessa y Hardin. Así, se estudia si se trata de una relación tóxica y en qué puede afectar a las chicas menores (las consumidoras principales de este producto). En el texto original destacan escenas de malos tratos y violencia hacia diferentes personajes. En el largometraje mantienen muchas de estas escenas, aunque otras han quedado descartadas para continuar la trama o porque eran demasiado impactantes.

This research aims to analyze the phenomenon of After, a work that originated as fanfiction on the Wattpad platform. Later, it became a bestselling novel and, subsequently, a successful film franchise. The study focuses on the five products of the After series, examining them both as literary texts and as film adaptations. In this regard, it explores the story’s roots in fanfiction and the broader context of fandom culture. The research also seeks to categorize After as a media phenomenon by studying its box office performance and the evolution of its genre. Wattpad, now operating with its own traditional publishing imprint and audiovisual production company, collaborated in the adaptation of all After’s books for the screen. Furthermore, several other novels originating on the platform have since been traditionally published and turned into films. Finally, this investigation addresses the relationship between the protagonists, Tessa and Hardin, analyzing whether it constitutes a toxic relationship and how it may impact young female audiences, the primary consumers of this content. The original text contains notable scenes of abuse and violence toward various characters. Many of these scenes are kept in the films, while others were omitted either to advance the plot or due to their graphic nature.
