Discourses on the relationships between gender, sexuality and demand for paid-sex in spain

Abstract

This research explores the relationship that emerges from social discourses between the social construction of gender, the social construction affective-sexual relationships and the demand for paid sex of men who pay for sex in Murcia (Spain). Methods: The methodology has a qualitative approach, based in case studies, throught analysis of the social and individual discourses of participants (focus groups and in-depth interviews). The saturation was used to determine the sample: 13 women and 10 men. The information was collected between 2016 and 2022. Among highlights of the results: Prostitution and the motivations of prostitution clients to pay for sex are embedded in a broad socio-cultural system that structures relationships between men and women in Spain. Conclusions: The institution of prostitution reproduces a message of inequality between women and men and helps to perpetuate and reproduce gender stereotypes at the social level, but this is not always reproduced at the individual level at the time of exchanges between prostitutes and clients. Policy implications: Information on the real situation of women in prostitution is needed to address this phenomenon and thus reduce gender inequality and protect the rights of of these women.

Esta investigación explora exploran los discursos sociales entre la construcción social de género, la construcción social de las relaciones afectivo-sexuales y la demanda de sexo de pago de los hombres que pagan por sexo en Murcia (España). Métodos: Mediante un enfoque cualitativo, basado en estudios de casos, con el análisis de los discursos de los participantes (grupos focales y entrevistas en profundidad). La saturación determinó la muestra utilizada entre 2016 y 2022: 13 mujeres y 10 hombres. Entre los resultados más destacados la prostitución y las motivaciones para pagar por sexo están incrustadas en un amplio sistema sociocultural que estructura las relaciones entre hombres y mujeres en España. Conclusiones: La prostitución reproduce un mensaje de desigualdad entre mujeres y hombres, y perpetúa y reproduce estereotipos de género a nivel social, pero esto no siempre se reproduce a nivel individual en los intercambios entre prostitutas y clientes. Implicaciones de política: Se necesita información sobre la situación real de las mujeres en la prostitución para abordar este fenómeno y, al mismo tiempo, reducir la desigualdad de género y proteger los derechos de estas mujeres.
