The modern sport is rooted into and proceed from the need to bind our societies and to achieve peace for the world. The International Olympic Committee established as main goal “to create a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example, social responsibility and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles”. Moreover, the Olympic Charter refuse “any kind, such as race, colour, sex, sexual orientation, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status”. The values spread by the Olympic movement through the sport activity and the competition are definitely in line with the constitutional principles. However , the mass media have not been able to take proper advantage from sport as powerful tool of socialization and they have instead commercialized the sports news and events at any price, above all, in the football sector. The big sports media style and principles’ guidelines claim that it is essential to foster the sport’s values , but actually what happens for real is another story. Insidious opinion columns, trivial polemics and news based on gossip are the habits within the sports journalism nowadays, into which, of the Olympic ideas and aims, just a crumb is left. This work aims to find, within the specific sports journalism sector, and by cases, with specific regard to football, where the freedom of information and expression has his own limits, there where other rights rises. In order to proceed, it will be necessary a initial summary of past and current status of sports journalism, and then to go in depth with the analyses of representative cases, when the justice had to intervene to establish whether a subject of the mass media overcame the supposed limits.
