Introduction: Hallux Valgus, commonly known as a bunion, is a progressive condition with a multifactorial etiology. Predisposing factors such as improper footwear, obesity, advanced age, and female gender increase its prevalence. Diagnosis requires a biomechanical evaluation first, followed by imaging tests such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. Treatment can be conservative in mild cases or surgical in more severe cases.
Objectives: To review the existing literature regarding the effectiveness and accuracy of different imaging techniques used in the diagnosis and therapeutic management of hallux valgus
Material and methods: A literature review was conducted on the use of imaging techniques for the therapeutic approach to hallux valgus. The search was performed in two databases, PubMed and ScienceDirect, excluding studies involving minors and
those published more than 5 years before.
Results: The selected articles reflect diverse findings. Imaging techniques, including X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs, effectively determine the severity of hallux valgus by assessing angles and relevant anatomical structures, such as sesamoid bones and the anterior tibial tendon.
These tools were also valuable in planning surgical procedures and selecting personalized treatments. Intraoperative ultrasound stood out for optimizing surgical accuracy and minimizing errors during procedures. Overall, these strategies enhance the comprehensive management of hallux valgus, from initial evaluation to postoperative care.
Conclusion: Imaging techniques play a crucial role in the therapeutic management of hallux valgus.
