This research paper explores the use of performance as an activist tool to reclaim
lesbian visibility and politicized spaces.
The research starts from the premise that, at present, there is a lack of lesbian
gathering and activist spaces that are outside of mainstream, often highly
sexualized, party codes. As LGBTQ+ movements have expanded, and despite the
advent of transfeminist politics in the Spanish state, the lesbofeminist struggle has
been diluted within a more general activism, ceasing to have a recognized space.
The traditional lesbian spaces have been questioned from within and outside the
movement, mainstreaming the struggle to other demands. This situation has led to a
loss of visibility and a decrease in spaces where lesbians can organize, share
specific experiences and fight for their rights.
In response to this situation, the research proposes performance as a strategy to
recover these spaces and enrich the legacy of the lesbofeminist struggle.
Performance, understood as an act of both artistic and political expression, allows
reclaiming spaces in the public sphere in a collective, public and present way.
Through case studies of performances in politicized environments and interviews
with activists, artists and close circles, the study delves into the potential of these
practices to serve as catalysts in the recovery of certain political codes, the physical
and everyday presence of reality and lesbian activism as well as its visibility, which
has become more complex over the years.
In addition, the intersections between art and activism are analyzed in an
interdisciplinary way and from diverse methodologies, considering how
performances can challenge dominant narratives and offer new forms of
understanding, resistance and voice to marginalized collectives by providing safe
and communal spaces where a radical and transformative politics can be built
among all and for all.
