Introduction: Chemsex is a subtype of sexualized drug use characterized by illicit drug use
with the aim of maximizing pleasure, increasing desinhibition and improving sexual
performance, being a practice frequently observed among men who have sex with other
men, usually in sex groups. Chemsex has also been related to the development of dangerous
sexual practices and an increase in the risk of transmission of HIV due to the decrease in risk
perception that drugs provoke. Recent studies have found that Chemsex is related to poorer
mental health and more prevalence of mental disorders.
Hypothesis: The practice of Chemsex provokes a decrease in mental health and could be
implicated in the development of mental disorders.
Objective: To describe psychiatric comorbidity in patients who practice Chemsex and to
assess the reasons for this practice.
Material and methods: A bibliographic review is carried out, employing Pubmed, Scopus
and PsychINFO, using keywords such as “Substance-Related Disorder”, “Sexual Behaviour”,
and “Mental Health”. 24 articles were selected.
Results: Evidence suggests an association between Chemsex and poorer mental and sexual
health, as well as quality of life worsening. An association between Chemsex and depression,
anxiety, psychotic symptoms, somatization, suicidal tendencies andpast traumatic experiences is also found. These symptoms appear more frequently and in more severe
forms in Slamsex -with intravenous drug use- but might not appear in less extreme forms of
Chemsex.
Conclusion: It is difficult to assess whether or not Chemsex is a predisposing factor for
mental disorders due to the multitude of variables implicated within this phenomenon.
However, we can say that extreme subtypes of Chemsex such as Slamsex are related to an
increase of psychiatric comorbidities.
