Introduction: esophageal atresia is a gastrointestinal malformation characterized by a discontinuity of the
esophagus, associated or not, with a pulmonary fistula. Its prevalence is 1/3500 live births and survival rates
are around 90%. Furthermore, a variety of sequelae and comorbidities associated with this entity have been
described that limit the patient in their daily life. This leads us to pose the following research question: How is
the quality of life of patients with esophageal atresia?
Aim: to evaluate the quality of life in patients with esophageal atresia.
Method: cross-sectional descriptive study and critical analysis of the studies recovered by systematic review.
The following databases were consulted: MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus and Web of Science.. To assess the
methodological quality of the included articles, the guidelines for the preparation of cross-sectional studies
indicated in the STROBE guide were used. Results: initially, 126 results were obtained, and after applying inclusion and exclusion criteria and filtering
them, 11 studies were selected. All studies that compared the quality of life of patients with esophageal atresia
with that of the healthy population concluded that the quality of life of patients with EA is good or does not
present significant differences with respect to the healthy population. The factors that have been most
significantly associated with a decrease in quality of life are digestive symptoms (defined as the presence of at
least one of the following: GERD, impaction, swallowing difficulties, heartburn or vomiting) and prematurity.
Conclusions: although there are factors that have shown a negative impact on the quality of life of patients with
esophageal atresia (such as digestive symptoms or prematurity, among others), their overall quality of life is
similar to that of the healthy population.
