This academic work includes different aspects related to the study carried out on a group of police officers belonging to different police forces and their response to different situations of simulated armed confrontations. The study was carried out individually in terms of the resolution of a police intervention recreated for this purpose and where they had to discriminate regarding the legitimate use of the firearm. The important points of the study were the correct use of the firearm and the appearance of stress in the police officer during a situation in which his physical integrity, his life or that of third parties was threatened by an illegitimate attack. The psychophysiological effects that the stress caused in the agent, as well as the knowledge that he/she had on the subject, the previous inoculation of stress and the management of it in regular scenarios, were decisive in carrying out an adequate use of the firearm, as well as to redirect a specific situation in order to minimize the effects of a possible aggression or even avoid it, in addition to having full cognitive capacity as to what one wanted to do, how, why, in what way and when to do it, making decisions rationally. The study offered results with a high influence of stress on the response by the agent: nearly 80% of the police officers who participated in the study clearly suffered the effects of the stress of confrontation, seriously altering their cognitive capacity. of these and therefore, making it difficult to achieve and resolve the staging, using the firearm in an inappropriate manner.
