Introduction: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychological disorder characterized by re-experiencing the event, hypervigilance, tension and amnesia among others. The risk associated with post-traumatic stress is higher in cases of sexual assault and the simultaneous course of PTSD and substance use disorders is present in 46.4% of individuals with PTSD. Objective: To collect and study information on substance use as a coping strategy for PTSD caused by sexual assault. Methodology: Systematic review following the PRISMA Method carrying out a search in the PyscINFO, Scopus and Web of Science databases including studies in English, establishing as temporal criteria the studies published between 2018 and 2023. Results: A total of 6 articles were selected that met the inclusion criteria and the selected quality analysis. Conclusion: The results are not homogeneous, evidencing disagreements with the self-medication hypothesis, but establishing a significant relationship between substance use and PTSD. There is little research on this explanatory model with this specific population. There is a need for further research with studies in this population, including more mediating variables and studying other explanatory models for substance use.
