Sometimes sewage sludge is added to the soil without a previous complete characterisation of these materials, as it requires time and money and the current regulations prescribe analytical control needs that do not include the high variability in the specific composition of the sludge. The estimation of key parameters in terms of agronomic and environmental requirements based on the use of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can be an interesting proposal to solve current management problems. This works aims to validate NIRS-based models enhanced with the use of artificial intelligence tools as a method for estimating the main nutrients, organic matter and heavy metal content in sewage sludge and its comparison with classical analysis procedures. Forty sludges from different sewage treatment plants, grouped by plant treatment capacity and sludge stabilisation typology, were used to calibrate the model. The accuracy of the NIRS model compared to classical analytical results was studied depending on each parameter to be estimated, including a wide set of agronomic and environmental parameters. In general, SG2-PLS and SG3-PLS are the models that stand out for their better accuracy, as their R2 is found to be higher than 0.9 among the models that were applied
