Introduction. Cerebral palsy (CP) is defined as a series of varied clinical syndromes involving persistent impairments in the development of movement and posture, resulting from non-progressive abnormalities. One of the most common forms is hemiplegic cerebral palsy. The most common neurological clinical manifestations include ataxia, dystonia, athetosis, and especially spasticity. The severity of the symptoms can vary depending on the location and severity of the lesion.
Objectives. To conduct a literature review that provides an overview of the most recent and effective treatments for children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy affecting the upper limb, using scientific literature.
Material and Methods.
A bibliographic search was conducted in the PubMed, PEDro, Cochrane, IBECS, and ENFISPO databases for articles published in the last five years.
Results. Eight studies included modified Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (mCIMT) in their research, and the remaining two studies examined other physiotherapy techniques. A total of 361 children were included, and information was provided on the population, type of intervention and dosage, evaluated variables, measurement instruments, and obtained results.
Conclusion. The physiotherapy treatments studied in this review are effective as they improve motor skills, quality of life, and promote participation and activation in children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy affecting the upper limb, with differences observed in the results obtained.
