Substance Use Disorder (SUD) has negative effects on both physical and mental health, leading to dependency, social barriers, and comorbidities. It has been observed that physical exercise can be a complementary tool to treatment, helping to improve the health status of individuals suffering from this condition across multiple dimensions.
A study was conducted with 10 women diagnosed with SUD who were receiving treatment at a rehabilitation center. The concurrent exercise program lasted 12 weeks, with 3 weekly sessions led by professionals. The intensity and technical difficulty were progressively increased. The evaluation of the process was carried out at three points (at the beginning, mid-point, and end), assessing physical condition, quality of life, and exercise adherence.
The results show that engaging in regular physical exercise leads to improvements both physically and psychologically, positively impacting the participants' quality of life, which in turn contributes to better treatment adherence and potentially lower rates of dropout and relapse. Since the sample size was small, most of the findings are not significant and thus cannot be generalized. Therefore, further research with this population is needed to provide a more comprehensive analysis and comparison of the data.
