The ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) is a primate endemic to Southern Madagascar that is currently “Endangered” (EN) due to extensive anthropogenic activity in its natural habitat. After the appearance of law 31/2003, zoos such as “Río Safari Elche” become centres of education, research and conservation. However, ethological studies are necessary to improve the welfare of animals in captivity. In this context, the objective of this work is to evaluate how captivity conditions influence the behaviour of five individuals of this species. To do this, five environmental enrichments will be provided in order to increase their activity and reduce their stress. The results obtained indicated a notable improvement in the well-being of the subjects after the implementation of environmental enrichments, with a particular emphasis on trophic behaviours. However, we conclude that it is crucial to develop innovative designs that focus on optimizing foraging, thereby promoting natural and enriching behaviours. Finally, this study suggests the need for future research that further explores the interaction between animals and visitors, as well as the impact of indoor enclosures on their behaviour and general well-being. These lines of research could provide valuable knowledge to improve the quality of life of animals in controlled environments.
