Introduction: Basketball is a popular sport with specific risks, where lower limb injuries are frequent. Understanding the epidemiology of injures in basketball is essential for developing evidence-based specific interventions. The purpose is to provide guidelines for injury prevention. Objectives: The main objective of this review was to identify predominant lower limb injuries in basketball. Other objectives were to assess methods for predicting and identifying the main risk factors associated with these injuries. Methods: Literature review on databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Scielo, using the following keywords: “basketball”, “injuries”, and “lower extremity”. Inclusion criteria consisted of lower limb injuries in basketball players and studies conducted in English and Spanish, while exclusion criteria included literature reviews or meta- analyses, studies involving sports other than basketball, and wheelchair basketball studies. Results: A total of 14 articles were included, providing a combined sample size of 2588 individuals. The most frequent injuries were ankle sprains and knee injuries. A relationship was identified between the presence of concussions and previous conditions (such as lateral ankle sprain) with a higher likelihood of sustaining injures. Among the most significant risk factors are prolonged game duration, fatigue, low strength, physiological load, overtraining, and imbalance in recovery against training load. Conclusion: The results reflect that the main injuries are lateral ankle sprain and knee injuries. After identifying injury mechanisms and risk factors, there is a suggested need for further studies to assess the effectiveness of injury prevention programs and their potential long-term consequences.
