Abstract:
During childhood, children constantly explore flavors, textures, and consistencies of
food, establishing preferences/rejections for certain foods. Common eating disorders during
this stage include Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) and food selectivity.
Food selectivity is characterized by limited food intake and rejection of new nutrients, which
may be related to sensory issues that make eating difficult or painful for the child.
Sensory processing (SP) plays a significant role in eating, and difficulties in this area
are common in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While it's estimated that between 5% and
18% of the typical population has SP alterations, in children with ASD, this number may be
much higher, leading to significant complications in Activities of Daily Living (ADLs).
Therefore, Occupational Therapy plays an important role in addressing eating
problems through interventions that improve sensory integration and promote a positive
relationship with food. Occupational therapy based on Ayres® Sensory Integration Model
could be beneficial, although there is limited evidence regarding its effectiveness in treating
food selectivity in children with ASD.
Hence, this study focuses on developing the occupational therapy process in a case of
food hypersensitivity, aiming to develop effective interventions to improve the quality of life
of these children.
