The use of manipulative tools in secondary school is a common practice in areas such as Biology. However, in the teaching of geology their use is less frequent, due, on the one hand, to the lower representation of Geology in the basic knowledge required in secondary school, and on the other hand, to the complexity of the earth and its processes, and the limited specialization of teachers in this subject, which means more time and effort is requred to apply manipulatives tolos succesfully. On top of this, classes tend to be short, and resources are scarce for both teachers and schools, which leads to an even more difficult implementation.
This paper aims to compile manipulative tools that have been used over the years in Geology, highlighting the advantages in teaching, motivating and improving the assimilation of concepts, as well as reflecting on the difficulties encountered during their implementation. In the end, a series of activities are proposed which, as the authors reviewed here highlight, require few resources and time preparation, becoming excellent tools in the classroom.
