Abstract:

The main cause of acquired brain injury (ABI) is stroke or cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
according to the Spanish Federation of Brain Injury (FEDACE). A stroke is caused by the
sudden and abrupt interruption of blood flow in the brain. As a result, the brain does not
receive oxygen or the necessary nutrients, its cells are damaged and the functions they
perform are altered.
Depending on the area and size of the injury, different types of alterations and consequences
can occur, including hemineglect or unilateral neglect syndrome (USN). This symptom
generates a lack of detection, attention and response to objects, people or other stimulus
coming from the side contralateral to the brain lesion, in the absence of sensory or motor
disorders. Some people with this syndrome are unaware of the space on the side opposite the
lesion, and even of their own limbs. Not being aware of their affected side, nor attending to
stimuli coming from that side, patients present incapacity or problems in performing basic and
instrumental activities of daily living. In addition, this syndrome limits social participation,
functionality and quality of life of people.
For this reason, the aim is to produce an updated informative guide with recommendations to
be taken into account by caregivers and/or family members so that people with visuospatial
hemineglect after a stroke can carry out their daily activities.
