Introduction:
Down syndrome (DS) is a genetic disorder that occurs when a person has an extra copy of
chromosome 21.
This disorder causes physical characteristics in addition to cognitive and motor retardation.
People with Down syndrome suffer from certain health problems, such as problems in rest, in
the functioning of the systems, the cardiac system being the most affected, and an increased
risk of Alzheimer's disease.
For these reasons, they suffer changes in their occupational performance being affected all
their occupations such as: activities of daily living, work, leisure, social participation and rest
and sleep.
From occupational therapy, we work on the different difficulties of these people at a motor,
cognitive or social level.
The main objective of this profession is to achieve maximum autonomy in people with Down
Syndrome to gain independence in the future and thus improve their quality of life.
Objective:
The general objective is to provide an updated review of the role of an occupational therapist
in people with DS.
Material and methods:
A literature search was conducted in Pubmed and Scopus databases, of studies published in
Spanish and English between 2014-2024. The keywords were "occupational therapy" and
"down syndrome" using the Boolean operator "AND". Results:
Four articles that met the inclusion criteria were selected.
In this way we obtained results on the importance of occupational therapy intervention in SD.
Conclusion:
It is concluded that occupational therapy intervention has positive effects in people with DS.
