Menstruation is a natural process that begins at puberty and stops with menopause, characterized by monthly vaginal bleeding due to hormonal changes. This menstrual cycle is divided into three phases: follicular, ovulatory and luteal. During the menstrual cycle, they can appear syndromes such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and dysmenorrhea, which can affect quality of life and performance in sports activities. Oral contraceptives, which act as external sources of hormones, can regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve these symptoms, although their impact on performance is variable. This study seeks to analyze how the menstrual cycle affects power training in female athletes, focusing on specific phases of the cycle and contraceptive use. The systematic review was based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, selecting studies in English since 2000. The results indicate that hormonal fluctuations of the menstrual cycle do not significantly affect performance in power tests. However, the presence of premenstrual symptoms can decrease performance. Furthermore, no significant differences were found between women who used contraceptives and those who did not in terms of performance in power exercises. In conclusion, it is not necessary to adjust power training according to the phase of the menstrual cycle, but it is recommended to monitor and manage premenstrual symptoms to minimize their impact on sports performance. Future research should focus on how to control menstrual pain and its influence on sports performance.
