Survival of the young rabbits in the lactation period has been related to their birth weight. In this work, the effect of the two lines of rabbits selected divergently for litter size variability, season at parturition, sex of the rabbits, order of parturition and milk intake in the first hours of the rabbits' life on litter size at birth, 14 days of age and 28 days of age was studied. The individual weights of the goslings on the same days were also studied and the variability of the weights of the goslings in the same litter was studied by distance. Selection for litter size variability seems not to have affected litter size, nor the weight of the young from birth to weaning. There was no response to selection on the distance of litter weight in lactation. The weight of the litter at 14 days of age was higher in multiparous females than in primiparous females. A higher litter weight can be observed in the young rabbits that have milk spotting than in those that do not. As for the months of parturition, the results should be considered with caution, since the study belongs to the same season (spring) and to a short period of time, although the litter weight was higher than 14 days in the month of March. In conclusion, selection for litter size variability does not vary litter weight in the lactation period. Primiparous females require special attention during lactation and it is highly recommended to make sure that the goslings have taken colostrum in the days immediately after parturition.
