Turning Red (2022), in words of its director
Domee Shi, aims to honor Asian culture
by combining Western and Eastern animation styles.
With the aim of analyzing the Asian representation in the film, a case study has
been carried out, observing the references and inspirations then undoubtedly to
Turning Red in one of the films with a more particular animation within Disney/Pixar “universe”. Using Seymour Chatman’s narrative text model and delving into the representation
of the film’s content through the representation analysis of Francesco Casetti and Federico
di Chio, anime has been chosen as the main object of study, due to its easy recognition within the visual resources of the film.
The results of the analysis allow us to conclude that in recent years Disney seems to be
betting on stories starring more diverse characters, making other types of realities visible
and the movie Turning Red is one of its clearest examples.
