Two out of every three people with schizophrenia are active smokers, in addition, they also have greater difficulties in quitting smoking than the rest of the population. is associated in an increase in cardiovascular problems, being one of the factors that influence the reduction of life expectancy in these people. In view of this problem, there is a need for adapted treatments for smoking reduction and cessation in this population. This review aims to analyze the efficacy of medical and psychological treatments in patients with schizophrenia for smoking cessation or reduction. For this purpose, a systematic review was conducted in four different databases, finally finding eleven publications that met the established inclusion criteria. The results report that combined treatments, which includes pharmacological and psychological interventions, are more effective in achieving abstinence from smoking in comparison to the use of only one of these treatments separately. It is still to be determined the influence of psychological treatments on these interventions depending on their characteristics. It might be of interest to consider the cost-utility of new programs to be implemented in the future.
