Emotion regulation difficulties are considered to be transdiagnostic cognitive and behavioural etiopathogenic processes that cause and maintain many mental disorders. They also explain part of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and their subclinical manifestation, OCD symptomatology. However, few studies have examined this problem in adolescents. Objective: To analyze the relationship between cognitive strategies of emotion regulation and subtypes of OCD symptomatology in adolescents. Method: Cross-sectional descriptive study. A total of 307 adolescents between 12 and 18 years old participated. Sociodemographic variables, OCD symptomatology subtypes and emotion regulation strategies were assessed. Descriptive, bivariate and multiple linear regression analyses were performed. Results: The model created to explain global OCD symptomatology from emotion regulation strategies and gender explained 28.2% (p<.001). Strategies statistically significantly associated with OCD symptomatology were planning, self-blame, catastrophizing and gender (female). Statistically significant contributions of some emotion regulation strategies were found in all models created to predict OCD symptomatology subtypes. The adaptive strategy that showed the strongest associations was planning, while the maladaptive strategies were catastrophizing, self-blame and rumination.
Conclusion: Emotion regulation strategies seem to be related to OCD symptomatology. As adolescence is considered a risk period for the onset of OCD and a critical phase in the development of emotion regulation mechanisms, knowing the strategies associated with OCD symptomatology may be very useful for the development of prevention and treatment programs in adolescents.
