Introduction. Scaphoid nonunion represents one of the most difficult complications to treat of this bone's fractures, since it supposes a damage to the function of the wrist, so its resolution is important. Throughout history, different surgical techniques have been developed in order to find a solution, passing through the classic techniques like the Matti-Russe's and its later variations, until the coming of arthroscopy surgery.
Hypothesis. We propose as a primary hypothesis of the work the superiority of the arthroscopic technique in obtaining objective results over the open technique and as a secondary hypothesis, a lower pain score on the visual analogue scale (VAS) in arthroscopic surgery compared to open surgery.
Material and methods. 16 patients diagnosed with scaphoid nonunion treat it with arthroscopy surgery between 2016 and 2021 have been reviewed. The mean follow-up was 13'1 months.
The data have been collected and evaluated retrospectively.
Subsequently, a systematic review has been carried out, using database such as PubMed and Google Academy, and our results have been compared to articles where conventional open surgery was performed, as well as other articles with arthroscopy surgery.
Results. The union rate was 93'75% of the cases (15 out of 16). Pain (VAS) was reduced on average of 6 points. The average Quick-DASH questionnaire score went from 45’69 to 13’5. Most patients presented an improvement of the mobility of the wrist, just like a greater grip strength and a decrease in the scapholunate angle.
Discussion. After making a comparison with the existing literature, it was found that the results obtained in our series are like those published in both open surgery and arthroscopic surgery Therefore, it cannot be stated that the arthroscopic technique has superior results to conventional surgery, requiring more comparative studies of both techniques.
