Objective: Therapeutic exercise is commonly used for the treatment of plantar fasciitis. This review evaluated exercise protocols applied to plantar fasciitis to categorize them based on the type of exercise and their characteristics.
Methods: Searches were conducted in the electronic databases PubMed and Embase for randomized controlled trials in which at least one group received exercise as therapy, and in which the results on exercise dosage employed in different protocols were collected. The risk of bias was evaluated using the Cochrane tool, and methodological quality was assessed using the PEDro database.
Results: 84 publications were identified, with 16 eligible trials for inclusion. The review found stretching exercises for the fascia, gastrocnemius, and soleus, as well as leg, foot, and hip training, along with an aerobic program. The trials generally had a low risk of bias and high methodological quality.
Discussion: The use of different programs has shown heterogeneity in the dosage employed for each exercise. Stretching exercises were the most commonly used, followed by a high-load strengthening program for the leg and foot, with less evidence for the use of an aerobic training program and hip strengthening.
Conclusion: This systematic review provided insight into different exercises applied in plantar fasciitis that can be used by physiotherapists in clinical practice
