INTRODUCTION: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, also known as COPD, is a fairly
frequent respiratory pathology. Its symptoms are dyspnea, cough and/or sputum production, mainly
caused by smoking and exposure to air pollution .
Training inspiratory musculature helps strengthen the muscles involved in breathing since their
weakness could be associated with the different symptoms of COPD.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of inspiratory muscle training applied in patients with
COPD.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A bibliographic search of clinical cases was carried out in various
databases such as: PubMed, Web of Science and PEDro. The search was focused on clinical trials
published in the last five years.
RESULTS: The bibliographic search produced a total of fifty articles. The inclusion and exclusion
criteria were then applied and duplicates were eliminated. Finally, after reading the rest, we were left
with nine articles.
CONCLUSIONS: The IMT ( Inspiratory Muscle Training ) technique is beneficial in pulmonary
rehabilitation in patients with moderate COPD. With this technique, the patient improves the strength
of his/her inspiratory muscles, his/her quality of life, dyspnea and tolerance to exercise.
