Objectives: the main objective of this work is to study the toxicity and adverse reactions of benzophenones used in cosmetics, in order to study the possible risks for the population associated with these substances. Methods: this work has been carried out by means of a bibliographic review of the articles retrieved from Medline, via PubMed, in both English and Spanish languages, which dealt with the toxicity and/or adverse reactions of benzophenones in cosmetics. Results: in relation to the adverse reactions or toxicity of benzophenones we found various results, such as that they can be endocrine disruptors, mutagens, photoallergens, etc. In the analyzed studies carried out in vitro, no relevant conclusions were obtained since the methods used did not give conclusive results for what was studied. On the other hand, in the in vivo studies, the relevance of benzophenones as potential photoallergens, mainly benzophenone-3, was observed. Conclusions: Taking into account all that has been analyzed throughout this work, we can affirm that benzophenones, especially BP3, are potential photoallergens. It is also necessary to highlight the need for a greater number of in vivo tests to increase the knowledge of these adverse reactions, since the results of in vitro tests are not conclusive. To emphasize the need for more studies to increase knowledge of the possible risks of these substances and thus reduce certain problems in the population.
